Modern Rustic Home Look

Creating the Modern Rustic Home Look

Maison Rustic’s signature look, is all about bringing together the modern clean lines, painted finishes and neutral colours of scandinavian design, with the raw reclaimed woods, natural textures and distressed finishes of rustic farmhouse decor. Furniture in this style has a chunky square appearance usually with a raw wood top and straight painted legs, an update on older style farmhouse furniture to give a fresher look.

Modern Rustic style decor will usually always include crisp white ceramics, distressed painted woods through clocks plaques and smaller items and natural textures such as washed rattan, wicker, linen, hessian, seagrass or jute through baskets, rugs or soft furnishings.

Modern Rustic decor usually has a backdrop of neutrals or muted greys, blues and greens giving a fresher more scandi look, using concrete, faux flowers and more modern style accessories with lots of stars compliments and add to the look.

Inspired by the colours and textures found in old farmhouses with beams and stone floors but bringing the look up to date with the decluttered more minimalist feel of scandi chic, bringing a touch of modern to an old home or a touch of rustic to a new build.

Nordic Home Decor Creams and Grey Tones

The modern rustic colour palette includes tones found in old stone nordic style houses with soft linens, taupes and creams, shades of grey, emulating slate floors and freshened with crisp whites, blues and greens with a grey undertone inspired from a nordic colour palette.

It is always advisable to choose 3 colours for your scheme for example slate grey, crisp white and soft blue.

Choose your shade of blue or green and try not to mix these, choose an earthy blue like gustavian or a deep green like artichat from our vintage paint collection.

Pick one or two colours for your walls, ensure your flooring is tonal to the scheme. Then use the remaining colours to contrast with nordic home accessories or farmhouse style accessories. Using white instead of linen will give a fresh feel.

Nordic Home Decor Accessories

The modern rustic style uses a lot of whites, we love simple white ceramics to accessorise your room, concrete candle holders are a perfect way of adding both grey home accessories within the room and texture.

Raw or paint washed woods give an extra depth and looks great against light coloured walls, try adding a rustic wood clock or plaque with a meaningful message.

Choose a cotemporary style or metal finish lamp to add a modern touch to the room.

The nordic style home accessories with a wood wash or slightly distressed finish work well against darker colours and brings together the modern clean lines and neutral colours of scandinavian design with the distressed finishes or rustic farmhouse style decor.

Modern Rustic Scandi Furniture

It’s important to keep your furniture simple and if you can contrast the colour with your walls as this will ensure it stands out and looks effective.

Big rustic and solid wood furniture with clean lines is a great way to acheive this style, as well as adding furniture with pull out wicker baskets instead of drawers.

If you’ve gone for blue or grey on the walls use white or linen coloured furniture, you can always use chalk paints to change the colour of your furniture.

Try Sel de Mer, Early Grey, Shutter or Zinc in our vintage paint range to create the look.

To create a modern rustic style we love and recommend crisp white furniture with a wooden top and cup handles, like our Hampton range or our Scandi Furniture range which looks stylish and minimalistic and brings together wooden and metal.
